The Story Of Our Life - Shari Low

With the end of Term 2 over, and school holidays officially kicking off today, I'm taking advantage of the opportunity to stay in bed on these cold mornings a bit longer and read! I'm also working on my first blog giveaway, so keep an eye out for that soon!

I've read a few books over the past week or so, one being The Story Of Our Life by Shari Low.
This book made me laugh, and made me shed a tear (or two!)
The main characters, Colm and Shauna, appear to have everything going for them in life, happily married, and very in love, until one day they are faced with the biggest curveball that life could throw at them.
What makes this book a little different from your regular love story is how they opt to handle their predicament.
The book flows back and forth throughout the years, (each chapter is dated to make it easy for the reader to follow), outlining Colm and Shauna's relationship from when they met, until present day, and detailing significant events and moments throughout their relationship.
There are a few other characters in the story, including friends and family of Shauna's and Colm's, and each are relatable, though not all are likeable, particularly Shauna's father. But they could be your neighbour or work colleague or partner, because they are all so real, and add so much to the overall storyline.
The ending, although not quite what I was expecting, was written well, and had me reaching for the tissues.
I really, really enjoyed this book. It's a lovely, bitter-sweet romantic story that really tugged on my heartstrings.
I was given an ARC of this through netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

  1. Sounds interesting. I'm in a bit of reading slump at the moment. Can't seem to get really swept up in a novel.

    1. Hi Ness! Thanks so much for your comment. If you're finding it a bit difficult to get back into reading, I'd suggest a book called The One Who Got Away by Caroline Overington (my review is on the blog too). It's just so interesting and I'm sure you won't regret it if you give it a go. It is a thriller; I'm not sure if you're a fan of that genre or not, but it's a great book.

  2. I'm beginning to read novels again but they really need to engage me. I have two on the go which are both very new and written by Australian first time authors. One is The teachers secret and the other is the Paper House.

    1. Hi Denyse, thanks for your comment!
I haven't read either of those books; are you finding them interesting? If so, I'll have to add them to my loooong list of books to be read :)

  3. Sounds like my kind of book ... I'm guessing the curveball is cancer?

    1. Hi Janet, thanks for your comment. You're a clever cookie for guessing the curveball! It's actually the second book I've read this past week where cancer effects a character in the story, and it's always sad to read about. However, this book is told with a hint of humour and a lot of hope so that was really nice. I'll be having a giveaway soon so feel free to like my Facebook page so you don't miss out on when it's posted :)

  4. I can't remember the last book I read but I would like to get back into reading one day. My genre of choice was always historical romances, namely from the regency period. I blame Jane Austen!

  5. Hi Kirsty, thanks for your comment! I find reading so enjoyable, and always try to find the time to fit it into my days, but it can be difficult at times, so I can understand you saying you can't remember the last book you read. Based on your choice of genre, you might find The Lake House by Kate Morton enjoyable..
